I really enjoyed this!So I decided to take a look at some of these comments before writing any sort of review and I'm glad that I did because now I feel I can address a few questions you might have about this book.Is this like the Adrien English mystery series? The answer is yes and no. From the description alone you'll notice a lot of parallels (Bookseller/Antique dealer with a medical condition; muscley cop boyfriend; killer obsessed with the MC), you get the picture. But honestly, those similarities are skin deep and I found the rest of the book to be more varied than some of the comments here make it out to be. And to be honest, I preferred Snow's approach to soothing to English's. It just came off as more natural for amateur (even if Snow is a bit dumber - a solid complaint - which I put up with because characters that are stupid enough to put themselves in dangerous situations are my favorite <3).Is the romance rushed?Yes! The reviews mentioning how Snow and Winter go from zero to a hundred are true. I was a bit taken aback by how quickly things progressed with them because it really did seem to come out of nowhere. The attraction is there and the set up is pretty good, but going from hints of attraction to blowjobs is a pretty big step. From there things do even out, though, and I was very happy with how their relationship grew from that point on.How was the writing? The writing was great. I love how Poe writes her characters, you can tell they are multidimensional and have their own personalities. The dialogue is funny and real if occasionally a little cliched. What I noticed in the first chapter of the book, and this is something that stayed with me while I read, was a big lack of description. I am a writer myself and know the dangers of showing rather than telling and Poe gave herself an extra challenge by giving Snow achromatopsia (dude can't see colors). Still, we get very few descriptions throughout the book and it left me wanting some more visual stimulation. For example, when Snow finds the body. After he's been in the room for some time already we get a brief mention of a T shaped floorplan. That's something that could've been mentioned on the way in. What kind of shop is he in (antique obviously but I mean visually)? Were their high ceilings, describe the exterior or little signs of life? Is it well organized or cramped like most antique stores I've been in? That last one would have let me know as a reader whether running for your life would be feasible or not (will he trip in the middle of a crowded aisle or have a clear shot to the front door?).What did I think?Despite what might seem like a plethora of complaints above I adored The Mystery of Nevermore! I binged and finished in under 24 hours! Sebastion was an interesting guy who is in a really unique position to pick up mysteries. For all the comparisons between Calvin and Jake from the Adrien English series, I loved Calvin (Jake is a jerk). He's a caring guy and more real about his sexuality then half the "closeted cop" characters I've read in other stories. Yeah, the story had some awkward moments but it's a debut novel. It's great for what it is and I'm looking forward to more.PS Thank you for publishing short stories with this series, Author! I love it when writers do that! 2.5 starts rounded up to a 3.Sebastian the owner of an antique store is in a relationship with Neil a closeted police detective for 4 years. He's getting to the end of his rope waiting for Neil to step out of the closet. Just as he's decided that he's had enough things start happening around him regarding an auction that he participated in. In steps homicide detective Calvin another closeted detective. Murders, assaults and break-ins abound while Sebastian is instantly falling for Calvin.I liked the premise of the book but not so much the execution. I liked the mystery surrounding a possible rare Edgar Allan Poe book. I liked the wide range of characters, especially Max and Sebastian's dad. I didn't like that Sebastian was tired of being hidden but was willing to just jump into a relationship with another closeted cop while kicking Neil to the curb. I didn't like that Sebastian had sex with Calvin while still in a relationship with Neil. Cheating is a big No-No for me. I didn't like that Sebastian was being an amateur detective and causing more problems along the way. I didn't like that Calvin was instantly calling Sebastian intimate names but wasn't willing to be out with him.I'm hoping books 2 & 3 are a lot better.
