Gordon R. Dickson's 1962 novel " Necromancer (Childe Cycle Book 2) " straddles the line between science fiction and fantasy. There's a lot of parapsychology or perhaps the occult in the book (which isn't really surprising given what Dickson's setting up here). As with the first book of the series, " Dorsai! (Childe Cycle Book 1) ," I'd read it multiple times before this, with the last reading being around 30 years ago, and enjoyed it. But, since it was written back in the 1960s, it carries a lot of baggage from that era. Still, it's a well-written, nicely-paced story. I'm rating it at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.BTW: this book was very obviously scanned in and published without proof-reading. The number and "quality" of the OCR errors (particularly the wrong words) is pretty bad for a 55 year old $9 book. I was very disappointed when Dickson passed without completing the Childe Cycle series that I did not touch any of his books for years. When Bookbub posted this ebook for $1.99, I thought the price was ok.This e-book is a scan which has many errors, mostly spellings and capitalization. if I paid full price for this, I would be very disappointed. Most of the free out of copyright books have better edits.The story was like meeting an old friend, and remebering all the reasons they were a friend. Necromancer was not the first Childe Cycle story Dickson wrote, but it is the starting point of the series.This book starts the story of the development of mankind, starting in the near future and tracking the expansion into space and the splintering of mankind into types, warrior, scientist, mystic, fanatic, etc. It is set before the first interstellar space flights, but at a time when technology dominates the world.The Dorsai stories are stronger and Dickson's character development gets better in the later books. I was glad to read this one again.
